11. I volunteered my time at the Teen Reach center
in Charleston.
22. Teen Reach is directly connect to Family and
Consumer Sciences and helping families. It is a program for children who do not
have parents to go home to after school and I believe families that are closer
to the poverty line. The program picks the children up from school, gives them
an after school snack, allows the children to get help with their homework, and
bring the children to their homes when it is time to go if needed.
33. I worked closely with C.J. and the women who
works there watching and engaging with the students that came for the program.
With the profession I want to go into it helped me understand that I won’t only
be working with children but also other adults and their families.
44. Teen Reach has a very positive effect on the
community and these families that it assists. It allows the children to
interact and get help with their homework when they do not have that chance at
home. It also allows parents to know their children are in a healthy and safe
environment while they are at work and not home doing nothing or roaming the
streets and engaging in bad activities.
55. I think this was a very eye opening experience
and assignment. I really enjoyed going to Teen Reach and I had a good time with
the students who came. I got to help a couple of girls study for tests they had
and even colored pictures and talked to them. One of the girls told me how she
has diabetes and she was telling me all about it. She really knew a lot that I had
no idea about so it was fun to learn more about it. I also really like this
program I never heard of my community having anything like this and I feel like
it is very beneficial for everyone and that more communities should look into
things like this. I think it could stop a lot of children from getting in
trouble, help them get better grades, and even just give them someone to talk
to or something to do instead of sitting at home alone.
