Rachel Leninger's Project Link

1. I volunteered my time at Sunrise Senior Living.  It is a resident-centered environment. They are devoted to meeting the unique needs of each resident. It is designed as homelike to make the residents feel comfortable.

2. This assignment relates to many courses I have taken at Eastern Illinois University including our course. In class we talked about many disadvantages that elderly people face such as lack of mobility, abuse, and neglect. However, at Sunrise these individuals seemed very happy and well taken care of.

3. During my volunteer time I was able to work with the staff and see how an average day at Sunrise Assisted Living home is. The director was very friendly and welcomed me to come back anytime to volunteer and visit with the residents. After I completed my volunteering I was happy to see that the workers truly love their job and have a strong passion for what they do.

4. I feel this company is great for our community. Although with the rising numbers of individuals want to age in place or in other words remain in their home that is not always what happens. If an individual cannot remain in their home I feel this is a wonderful place for elder individuals.

5. Overall, I had a wonderful time volunteering at Sunrise Senior Living. After watching that video in class about the terrible care that elders are receiving, I have been very apprehensive about senior care. However, after my visit I realized not all senior living homes are bad. This is a great place for individuals to be. They can express themselves and are provided with tons of activities and games such as low-impact aerobics, dancing, music programs, and theater groups, ect. All of the workers seem to love their residents. They call them by their first names and were constantly pushing for conversation. One of my favorite things that I did was actually just to sit there and visit with the residents. It truly is an amazing feeling to know that I brought joy to these individuals’ lives.
