Project Link

1.       I volunteered at Walter Dui and Counseling Services for over 5 hours.

2.       I spent my time assisting clients during counseling sessions. I noticed that for some clients, regardless of age, did not feel they had a drug problem. The clients usually come to the center after being arrested for a DUI. The clients are provided with an evaluation to assess their risk level. Most are required to attend a risk education. The risk education classes are used as a education tool for the clients on drugs. The classes will address the emotional aspect of addiction as well, as the physical damage that drugs have on one’s body. The center also provides referrals to other health agencies if necessary. The center provided not only risk education but also counseling sessions are provided. The fees for the services are affordable and adjustments on fees for low income are advisable.

3.       The center gave me the opportunity to network with other resources. I was able to network with county and state officials.

4.       The center provided services to clients that have lost their driving ability, lost their children, and possible even their jobs. However, for most suffering from addiction, the loss of emotional stability with family and friends was the hardest burden when facing addiction. The center also provides the necessary paperwork needed for court officials. The center is providing services that will make the community safer by helping clients with substance abuse.

5.       I really enjoyed my time at the counseling center. I noticed that substance abuse does not discriminate. I helped clients at all ages and race. I noticed a lot of paper work is involved in providing services. I think that most of the people that first come to the center are required by the courts due to their DUI. They have in their heads I do not have a problem with drugs. I am just here, so I do not go to jail. I reflect on the individual that came in a month prior with an entitled attitude and left with the “I may have a problem” attitude.
