Sarah Neill - Illinois FCCLA Peer Education and Leadership Training

I volunteered at the Illinois Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Peer Education and Leadership Training held October 6-7, 2013 in Springfield Illinois. This conference is an annual meeting where students attend either Peer Education or Leadership Training. Peer Education involves students teaching their peers about a specific topic. This year the topic was safe driving. The students who attend Leadership Training learn how to be a better leader in their FCCLA chapters, schools, and communities. On Sunday, I helped sort T-shirts, hoodies, and polo shirts that were for sale. I also performed several other clerical duties. On Monday, I helped 4 other alumni and the Executive FCCLA director lead the leadership workshop. During the workshop I was able to network with many current FCS teachers, the Executive Director, and the woman who serves as the Family and Consumer Sciences contact at the Illinois State Board of Education. I was also able to network and talk with other alumni and current student members. This organization encompasses so many aspects of FCS it is difficult to choose just one, but it is interesting at these conferences to see how students interact with each other. It is especially fascinating to see how individuals from different socioeconomic statuses interact as well. FCCLA chapters and students complete countless community service activities within the community. The Peer Education students will complete a community service project about how teens, as well as others, should drive safely and what they can do to make sure they are actually doing so. Volunteering at FCCLA conferences is always fun for me. I have been involved with the organization for the past 10 years, the last 4 years as an alumni member. It is always fun to catch up with the other alumni and advisers at the event and to meet other adults in the field. It is exciting to talk to students and hear the ideas they have for their chapter for the coming year.
