Dr. Moyer's Fall 2013 Project Link

1. I volunteered at Central Illinois Autism Therapeutic Services, Bright Minds Educational Program here in Charleston, IL.

2. The services provided at this center include working with children ages 0-21 with Autism and other special needs.  Early Intervention is provided by the founder of the program, Vivian Skelley.  The Bright Minds Educational Program includes: after school program, part-time and full-time child care, social and summer camps, Compass social skills program, community support services, and parent training services.

3. During my visit i had the privilege to sit down and discuss further about Early Intervention with Vivian and what it takes and what it entails to be an Early Interventionist.  She educated me on the conditions that Early Interventionists look for in children, which can include: motor, intellectual, emotional or speech delays; cerebral palsy, down syndrome, or autism; and circumstances that put them at risk for developmental delays.

4. This program is a not for profit organization that provides child care and teaches social and behavioral skills to children with autism and other special needs.  This program aids disadvantaged families on the proper skills to provide care needed for their child with autism and special needs.  It helps keep the children on track with their education.  Community support programs are offered at the center as well as parent training programs.

5. I enjoyed volunteering at Bright Minds Educational Program; it put me out of my comfort zone and exposed me to be around children with autism and special needs and provide care to those children.  I believe that it can open doors for me to further my education on autism and possibly looking into Early Intervention as a career possibility.
